Is there a music app to which I can stream from my NAS that supports CarPlay?

Hi,

I’ve built my own NAS recently and I’m trying to get the max use out of it. I seem to be unable to find any iOS music app that integrates with CarPlay except VLC.

VLC works “okay” for streaming files that are on my phones local storage but it’s quite glitchy and sometimes tends to crash or becomes unresponsive. However the network shares are not accessible to navigate trough on the CarPlay dashboard and either I’m missing something but I can’t add any network shared folders to the Albums which are accessible on the dashboard.

BONUS: If the app allows transcoding so I don’t have to stream FLAC over mobile data, that would be a big time saver.

Plexamp will do what you’re looking for. You’ll need to run the server component either on your as or a VM with access to the music files

Haven’t got to try it yet as Manet seems to work and I don’t have to run extra server component so I’ll use that one for now but this is a nice backup if needed, thanks!

Emby has transcoding and audio only playback support for CarPlay

WereCat@lemmy.world on 28 Apr 15:07 collapse

Well, Emby looked fine until I’ve set everything up and went to try it and it won’t even let me unless I pay. I’ll leave this one as a backup for later but thanks.

Jellyfin+jellify seem to be good open source options

WereCat@lemmy.world on 28 Apr 15:35 collapse

Broken for CarPlay, unusable. Jellyfin stutters like hell when streaming to wireless CarPlay and Jellify stops playback after 2s. For now I’ve settled for Manet. But thatnks! Jellify looks good for music it just does not work for my use case.

Good thing there was another app option that worked!

Jellyfin is a direct fork of Emby so I wouldn’t even bother with it.

I believe symfonium might need your needs. It’s a paid app, but only one time payment. It can utilize several methods to stream.

I’ll put this not on a backlog for now since it’s paid but thx!

Are you against paying people for their work?

lol

I use Jellyfin along with the iOS client Manet. It’s not the best UI for CarPlay, but it gets the job done.

WereCat@lemmy.world on 28 Apr 15:34 collapse

THANKS!

Manet seems to work really nicely and actually also has kinda good and simple UI. I’m settling for this for now. Jellify/Jellyfin has some major issues when I try to send to CarPlay and it stutters heavily and sometimes randomply stops playback after 2s so that’s kinda weird.

edit:

Damn, it even has Siri integration, you win extra points today!

I keep my music off my Jellyfin instance and use Navidrome as the server and run Amerfy on my iPhone which has CarPlay

Navidrome on your server with Nautiline (paid app) on your phone. It has a couple days of free trial to see if it works for you.
