so, was installing the usual jellyfin-media-player flatpak on a new install as I did so many times, mistyped and was presented with a list of jellyfin related apps. there’s a new Jellyfin Desktop app in there that def wasn’t there before, has the official sounding org.jellyfin.JellyfinDesktop id.
installed it, looks the same. haven’t caught that in the news feeds I follow, so what’s the story there, what’s different from the iwalton3 thingy?
$ flatpak install jellyfin Looking for matches… Similar refs found for ‘jellyfin’ in remote ‘flathub’ (system): 1) app/org.jellyfin.JellyfinDesktop/x86_64/stable <-- new thing 2) app/com.github.iwalton3.jellyfin-media-player/x86_64/stable <-- old thing 3) runtime/org.jellyfin.JellyfinServer.Plugin.IntelComputeRuntime/x86_64/stable 4) app/org.jellyfin.JellyfinServer/x86_64/stable 5) app/com.github.iwalton3.jellyfin-mpv-shim/x86_64/stable
edit: so far, works as drop-in replacement, functionality is the same and command line switches work (e.g. I have a shorcut that launches it in TV mode on a 4K screen with --fullscreen --tv --scale-factor 2). the UI is noticeably faster and it plays some HEVC files that were glitching out on same hardware.

Jellyfin MPV Shim is a client for the Jellyfin media server which plays media in the MPV media player. The application runs in the background and opens MPV only when media is cast to the player. The player supports most file formats, allowing you to prevent needless transcoding of your media files on the server. The player also has advanced features, such as bulk subtitle updates and launching commands on events.

please reread what I am asking, mpv-shim is a totally different thing and not mentioned in the question.
Oh, sorry.
Jellyfin Desktop is the new client, they rebranded it. Version 2.0.0.
Jellfin Media player is old, last updated 11 months ago, version 1.12.0.
Both are official, but Jellyfin Media Player will soon stop working, as the server updates.
See jellyfin.org/posts/state-of-the-fin-2026-01-06/#c…
Yep, its official and rebranded, and so far it actually plays video, unlike the last one.
