Good news for all - Our LG webOS app is now approved for all versions! No more developer mode or homebrew required, just go the content store and install!

If you currently have the developer or homebrew versions installed, please make sure to remove those before using the store version.

Woooohooo

AbidanYre@lemmy.world on 20 Mar 2024 18:57 next collapse

This is amazing! I can’t even remember how long I’ve been waiting for this.

jkozaka@lemm.ee on 20 Mar 2024 19:02 next collapse

Guess i’m going to give jellyfin a try now.

CountVon@sh.itjust.works on 20 Mar 2024 19:31 next collapse

I’ve been using the LG Jellyfin app for a few months now and it’s been great. I’ve got an LG CX from 2020 and didn’t need to use developer mode, but I guess others weren’t so fortunate. I’m not sure which TVs were missing support before but great to see that it’s now supported on all versions of WebOS.

fruitSnackSupreme@lemmy.world on 21 Mar 2024 02:31 collapse

I gave it a solid try on my Unraid server, mostly using android to stream to Chromecast. And I’m sorry but it just isn’t good enough for regular use. Too many bugs. Subtitles were all kinds of messed up (and it’s not the subtitle file, because it all works fine on Plex), remote control for Chromecast kept disappearing. Only came back after force stopping the app. I had a number of other minor issues and errors, but it was too much to switch over from Plex, where I haven’t had any of these problems. I tried. Maybe I’ll give it another shot in a year or two.

The discord for Jellyfin wasn’t very helpful either when I tried to give this feedback. Basically told me I’m probably doing something wrong. Ok well back to Plex then.

anthonylavado@lemmy.ca on 21 Mar 2024 03:16 collapse

Sorry to hear that. Chromecast (the old kind) has always been difficult to work with for us, as opposed to the Android/Google TV client where we’ve been able to make things a lot more reliable.

I hope we can get some contributors to give the Chromecast app another pass some time soon.

Regardless, we’ll be around if you ever need another alternative :-)

Link@rentadrunk.org on 20 Mar 2024 19:07 next collapse

Congratulations! This is great!

Slightly off topic but how is the Samsung Tizan app submission coming along?

floridaman@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 21 Mar 2024 01:26 collapse

Here’s the issue tracking that submission, you can follow it through GitHub to receive emails on any updates.

thantik@lemmy.world on 20 Mar 2024 19:16 next collapse

This is GREAT NEWS! – I think we’ve got many thousands who are running the LG WebOS and that was a big hurdle for them adopting Jellyfin in the first place!

Cool! Any plans to make an offical app for Samsung TVs? I know it might be a Samsung limitation

ebits21@lemmy.ca on 20 Mar 2024 22:39 next collapse

It would be great. I just bought Rokus rather than deal with getting the Samsung apps loaded.

criitz@reddthat.com on 20 Mar 2024 22:53 next collapse

I would love to see this too, it would really help Jellyfin take hold in my house.

floridaman@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 21 Mar 2024 01:23 collapse

Jellyfin has an official Samsung TV app! It’s not available on the Samsung app gallery yet but there are developer instructions on their github

dmnknf@lemmy.ml on 21 Mar 2024 01:31 collapse

Maybe they are better off not going official in this one, I worked for a streaming company that had official apps on every major system, and the Samsung team is a pain in the ass

tun@lemm.ee on 21 Mar 2024 02:58 collapse

I should have seen this before I bought my Samsung TV.

dmnknf@lemmy.ml on 24 Mar 2024 13:52 collapse

Man, sometimes samsung gets up to 2 months behind LG in updates. Then we update a whole lot of shit and it turns into hell to debug because so much changed at once.

SmoothLiquidation@lemmy.world on 20 Mar 2024 20:08 next collapse

How does this compare to the AndroidTV client? Are they pretty much the same feature wise?

anthonylavado@lemmy.ca on 20 Mar 2024 20:11 next collapse

Wow the spam was off the charts. Sucks to not have a “mass delete” function.

n0xew@lemmy.world on 20 Mar 2024 23:07 next collapse

Yeah this user spammed another topic in the linux community, I was surprised to see a jellyfin topic being spammed too… That’s the price of being a popular software I guess!

ReversalHatchery@beehaw.org on 21 Mar 2024 02:12 collapse

Wow, what kind?

kaitco@lemmy.world on 20 Mar 2024 20:24 next collapse

This is so awesome!

I was actually thinking about buying a new TV just so I could have the Jellyfin all through webOS. 😅

ReversalHatchery@beehaw.org on 21 Mar 2024 02:12 next collapse

That’s sounds cool!

Though I have to ask something. Does the LG store manipulate the app in any way after you upload a release to them?
Asking because there are some weird stores that do so, like the amazon android app store embeds data mining (stated in the tos).

Because if they do, then homebrew is still a better way, even if I have to click a button every 3 weeks (even though it isn’t needed, it can be scripted)

anthonylavado@lemmy.ca on 21 Mar 2024 03:12 collapse

I’ll be honest, I have no idea. There were no toggles and as far as I can tell the IPK seems to be the same size. I would consult the terms and conditions of the LG Content Store and make the best decision for yourself 🙂

CCMan1701A@startrek.website on 21 Mar 2024 02:19 next collapse

Nice. I miss my palm pre:(

Showroom7561@lemmy.ca on 21 Mar 2024 02:38 next collapse

I don’t get it. I’ve been using Jellyfin from the LG app store on my TV since late 2022.

anthonylavado@lemmy.ca on 21 Mar 2024 03:11 collapse

It was previously only available to webOS 6 (2022 models) or newer, then we expanded it to webOS 5/5.5 (2020 or newer), and now it’s all models.

Showroom7561@lemmy.ca on 21 Mar 2024 05:53 next collapse

Ah, very nice!

Hugin@lemmy.world on 21 Mar 2024 04:17 next collapse

Great. It’s going to be so nice to not have to remember to renew developer mode.
