Alternative AppleTV clients - anyone tried them?

While looking for some alternatives to Swiftfin and Infuse, I’ve found these:

Reefy - mentioned here / GitHub
Fork of Swiftfin as the author was fed up with the lack of updates.
$8.99 one-time IAP

JellyTV - Homepage
£1.99/month, £29.99/year (looks like there’s a discounted option at £14.99/year), or £39.99 for life.

The maths is not quite mathing here as the for-life IAP is £39.99, the familiy upgrade is another £39.99 which makes £79.98 total — but the “family-for-life” option is £89.99 for some reason. (Makes you wonder whether this was vibe-coded.)

Neptune - Homepage
Currently in beta and you need to ask on their Discord for the Testflight link.

Has anyone tried any of these?

Apple fans are weird.

Honestly, you’ll be better off buying an Android box from a renowned company, or a used mini PC.

By the way, what specific issues do you have with Swiftfin?

Would be useful to know what issues you’ve been having with Swiftfin and Infuse so people can better advise on these alternatives.

I’ve tried Mediora but didn’t really like the UI. And Swiftfin is still quite buggy/lacking polish (I’ll retest after large upcoming uplift).

But overall much prefer Infuse over everything on tvOS (my fav client of all time Kodi or Plex or Emby or Jellyfin).

No issues per se. I’m still mostly using Plex and have Swiftfin and Infuse installed. Just wanted to see whether I’ve missed a gem before trying to wean the rest of the family off of Plex.

Did Reefy actually add any serious improvements, or did they just merge existing PRs and then make the app paid?

Chaphasilor@lemmy.ml on 17 Apr 19:25 collapse

Okay so they just re-wrote the commit history?

<img alt="" src="https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/7a4e87a9-ffe2-4702-b2a3-a4f2eec719b5.png">

And it seems like the app is just an LLM-powered Liquid Glass UI refresh with some LLM-powered bug fixes. I get that Claude tokens are expensive, so I guess it’s fine to charge money from the people that are happy about these changes. But it also feels a bit discrediting towards the Swiftfin authors…

Yeah, that rewrite doesn’t sit well with me either. Thanks for investigating.

And my gut feeling is that Neptune will also be some vibe-coded thing…

I honestly don’t mind vibe coding too much if there is a significant improvement. But to me at least, this isn’t one.
