Coincidentally there was a Half-Life 2: Episode 3 leak the other day

mushroommunk@lemmy.today on 30 Aug 14:37 collapse

You mean the file dump that hasn’t actually been shown to have episode 3 stuff in it or something else?

SomGye@sh.itjust.works on 30 Aug 23:40 next collapse

The 12TB Steam dump that supposedly has stuff, I admittedly didn’t look into it since it’s not really my interest

boonhet@sopuli.xyz on 30 Aug 23:56 collapse

I believe the news was “we haven’t looked through all of it yet so we can’t guarantee there ISN’T any episode 2 stuff”

sundray@lemmus.org on 31 Aug 02:43 collapse

I think there was some unused assets for the scrapped version of Portal 2 which may or may not have been shared with a potential HL2: Episode 3 or something. Which is like, meh? Close enough for headline writers to go nuts, anyway.

bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de on 30 Aug 14:27 next collapse

My copium is that they’re not releasing the Steam Frame because they’re finishing HL3 which will be a launch title, playable in VR or flat.

KoboldCoterie@pawb.social on 30 Aug 14:39 collapse

Given what a banger HL: Alyx was - definitely the best VR title that I played, at least - that would be incredibly hype. Heck, I’d just take HL: Alyx 2.

bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de on 30 Aug 14:51 next collapse

Or they’re just fighting to get Alyx to run directly on the headset because of course everyone will try to do that despite any warnings.

lonefighter@sh.itjust.works on 30 Aug 19:47 collapse

Alyx is not my favorite VR game, but I do think it is the best VR game made. It is so immersive that there were many times playing it where I genuinely forgot I was playing a game. My first playthrough I played the entire last half, from exiting the Northern Star all the way through the end, in one hours long session and by the time I took off my headset I felt like I didn’t quite know who I was, where I was, or what the F just happened. I felt a little disoriented and off kilter for like 2 days afterwards. 10/10 experience, highly recommend.

Based.

I gave up hope when Marc Laidlaw posted his story treatment years ago. It might come some day, but it will be something closer to a reboot or a remake, a totally new generation’s take on an old franchise. Not saying that it will automatically be bad, it could be good, but it will also be different.

Kefla@hexbear.net on 31 Aug 05:36 collapse

Half-Life was always a gameplay-first series anyway. Everything exists in service of the gameplay loop. Of course if Half-Life 3 was made today it would look very different from a Half-Life 3 made in 2008 or 2010 or 2015, not just in gameplay but in the story that would shift in service of the gameplay.

It is really cool to get some insight into where that story might have gone back in 2008 though.

cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 30 Aug 16:09 next collapse

Right, because Boromir went to the alternate future where Valve continued making games… rather than just selling everyone else’s.

If capitalism taught us anything, it’s that middle-manning is the most efficient way to make money for doing basically nothing. 🤢

Bahahaha, savage. 🤣

Flames5123@sh.itjust.works on 31 Aug 01:31 next collapse

Well you’ll get a broken game on the disc because it’s missing the day 1 45GB patch. Even worse is that a system update that doesn’t exist yet may be needed to even play the game properly.

Killer57@lemmy.ca on 31 Aug 04:43 collapse

There is more than enough proof that HLX exists in a polished state at the Valve offices, it’s just a matter of getting them to acknowledge it/let it out into the world.
