Banned?

We are literally just posting ads here now?

Let’s take a few seconds to think about the meaning behind this post, conduct a bit of research, then talk with your table partner about why OP posted this here

I guess the UK authorities think they’re impervious to the Streisand effect.

This would have been hilariously ironic, especially given the name of the ad campaign, if it wasn’t so grim.

The US and the UK trying to one-up each other for the worst tech laws and regs. We will not let you out-dumb us, Brits! You merely adopted the dumb. We were born in it. Molded by it.

It was widely predicted that age or geography restrictions lead to VPNs, and VPNs lead to banning VPNs, and banning VPNs lead to circumventions, and circumventions lead to better detections, and better detections leads to better circumventions, until everyone is dizzy and wants off the bloody ride.

It’s easy to think, this is ok, I can get around the surveillance. I’ll just tunnel over this and bounce through that and triple-rot13 it all. Take that, bureaucrats! Yet the difficulty goes up and up. More and more people are unable to do it. More and more do not want to deal with the hassle. More and more do not want the legal exposure, or are not even aware.

In countries that already ban VPNs, some people can get around that. It is never iron clad. But it is still effective again most people. It is risky for the others.

I do not believe this problem has a technical solution. Only a cultural and political one.

“The US and the UK trying to one-up each other for the worst tech laws and regs. “

Meanwhile, Australia … “Hold my beer”

Tenderizer78@lemmy.ml on 23 Feb 07:10 collapse

Australia has some bad tech laws, don’t get me wrong, but they’re nowhere near on the level of the UK.

I honestly don’t get why people don’t mention more Mulvad VPN, most VPN tierlist barely include it. It’s 5€ 5 devices, the account it’s just a number, no email no password, pay with cash, credit card or crypto and most importantly no logging

Nighed@feddit.uk on 22 Feb 23:32 next collapse

Most tier lists are probably paid

Hiro8811@lemmy.world on 23 Feb 00:03 collapse

Tier lists? Mulvad only has that offer, no free options no discounts.

TiredTiger@lemmy.ml on 23 Feb 00:08 collapse

Yeah, a lot of those ranking sites are actually owned by some of the more shady VPN providers. I know I’ve seen a diagram somewhere of the connections between some of these companies, but I can’t remember where off the top of my head.

Hiro8811@lemmy.world on 23 Feb 01:02 collapse

Ah, didn’t understood what you said at first my bad. Yeah that probably makes sense not to mention that youtubers are probably sponsored.

pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 23 Feb 03:56 collapse

Techlore, The New Oil, privacy guides, and privacytools have mullvad on there iirc. If you search up “best vpns” you’ll get AI generated articles and paid sponsorship and referral websites for nord vpn

Armand1@lemmy.world on 22 Feb 23:29 collapse

Is this actually targeted at the UK?

It’s a super American ad. Everyone sounds American, we don’t really have drive thru’s like this etc.

In terms of message it’s spot on for both the UK and US though. Especially prescient given the Flock stuff going on in the US right now.

EDIT: From the article, it sounds like this has been used in a few places, but the UK is the only one that has banned it. The reasoning behind the ban is laughable.

It looks like there’s a longer version available on the site, but it’s broken for me.
