Rule 3 - Updated

Well its only been a couple days, but the response has been very consistent and functionally unanimous.

Rule 3 is now revised to read:

Posts here are to be centered around self-hosting. Please ensure it is clear in your post how it relates to self-hosting.

There may be some slight tweaks, but I’m going to consider this good for now.

As an important note, I’m still waiting on a ticket response from the lemmy.world team to get my lemmy.world alt added for report purposes. If you see something that requires more immediate attention please send me a message in addition to a report. Also, some of the other rules have been trimmed to just the point of the rule, removing the commentary in them.

In addition, rule 7 (low effort posts) is deleted as everyone seems to agree its handled just fine with votes.

A few related items out of the discussion:

I appreciate everyone’s input on this! And remember I’m just here to help, so if there are any other rules / descriptions / whatever you feel should be up for discussion, you can feel free to start a discussion about it.

Well you certainly have brought a lot of clarity to the table, and that is admirable and appreciated. Most of use left Reddit for a reason. It would be nice if lemmy.world/c/selfhosted didn’t turn into Reddit. There are so very few selfhosting brain trusts out there.

Myself included, left full time at the APIcalypse and never looked back.

I definitely prefer a successful fediverse!

Completely agree with this one. I like to browse new and I’d rather keep the occasional low effort post than delete them. There are relatively few posts at it is.

This one is tough for instances like mine. Downvotes are turned off, so I and others like me who choose to experience the Fediverse in a different way will not see posts fall, only rise. In theory, these low-effort posts wouldn’t get many positive votes in the first place, but it would be nice to still have an option for those of us who don’t use downvotes.

Basically, removing the rule and relying on downvotes is excluding of instances that don’t have downvotes.

Thats fair, though I’ll point out that in the past 2 months there have been 2 posts removed for being “low effort”, and were also not at a negative anyway just a mod’s personal perspective.

The most recent one that actually was upside down self-deleted.

I don’t believe there is any real issue at the moment here, but you are welcome to start a discussion thread on it.

Edit: Slight correction to myself - there was one more which I’m about to pull the plug on, unfortunately I haven’t gotten any reports on it due to report federation issues. Hopefully the .world folks can help resolve the inability to add my lw alt soon…

I think that’s a fair assessment. If it becomes an issue where we’re getting inundated with low-quality posts, then it might be worth bringing it back up.

I want to add on to this comment that there are also users who use clients that hide the ability to downvote if negative scores or downvotes are disabled in the settings (which is fair). Tesseract is one that comes to mind with that restriction, where if downvotes are turned off, your downvote button is removed and the upvote button is replaced with a like/heart button.

Being said, agree I don’t see many low quality posts in the first place. But it would be nice if reports or comments could be included as a way to judge low effort as well,

I’d say no matter what reports will always be a factor (well, once I can consistently see them at least, thus the note to DM)
