Just taking a minute to share this podcast with y’all. I know it’s already in the sidebar here, but thought Alex & Chris deserve a shout out for their great show.
They talk about the week’s news and their own experiences hosting at home. Listening to them talk tech makes me more confident about my hosting.

What ever happened to that network? I stopped paying attention when digital ocean dropped them all
Jupiter Broadcasting? Still alive and kicking. Not sure what you mean by digitial ocean, thry had merged with Linux Academy for some odd reason, then A Cloud Guru bought LA, then Joe Ressington got shitcanned for using a very british slang in a meeting and seemed like right after that Chris took it back independent and he kept on with LUP, Selfhosted and a couple others I don’t listen to.
Ressington has gone on to make what I think is a very successful Linux podcasting network, Late Night Linux, certainly enjoy their shows. I’ve been a patron of his stuff for several years now, and there’s a good bunch of people hosting those shows these days.

Irish person who swears a lot here (to the point of being reprimanded by US-based HR at work), you’re taking a massive risk saying “cunt” in a professional setting. Getting fired rather than reprimanded seems pretty harsh though.
It’s unfortunate, I’d have an issue too, I have Canadian farmer levels of swearing I don’t even notice myself doing it. And some of the sayings are probably racist as hell but it’s not meant that way, it’s just carryover from the old days.
In the end I think it worked out well for him, but some understanding that not every culture is as uptight and puritanical as America would have been in order.
thanks for this bit of history. I had no idea joe was involved with Jupiter previously but it explains how he and Alex seemed to know each other.
I’m glad that Joe’s podcasts are still going. I find Chris and the Jupiter crew insufferable to listen to. the episodes feel like a mix of ads and cryptobegging between brief overly animated bits of content.
They seem to go in spurts on the cryptobullshit. Sometimes you go for months without hearing anything about it, then it’s part of the next 5 LUP shows. I can certainly do without it, and I think he gets emails shitting on him for it and he tones down for a while.
I did walk away from all his shows for a couple years there because he was on and on about how anyone that’s still mad at Microsoft is stupid, and I couldn’t take it. It was like he was on the payroll there for a while.
maybe the reality is somewhere between them marketing things but also being really passionate about something. good observations.
You missed the part where Chris struggled to continue to get ad revenue in ~2023, so went hard on cryptocurrency.
Mike bought out Coder Radio this year and now it’s independent from JB.
Ah, I did not know that, but that’s one of the shows I don’t listen to. I listen to the Changelog shows for much of my dev stuff.

I’ll give it another try (hopefully without Chris it’s not two guys talking about the latest apple fad anymore?).
That show stood out as the only one without crypto bullshit (I assume, because the hosts disagreed on the matter)
So far it’s been an interview show. I have enjoyed the interviews so far.
2.5admins is a great show even if you aren’t an admin.
Still been going with multiple shows. I don’t think it was “dropped”, if I recall Chris bought back the rights to his own shows, so he could manage it himself. There was some controversy when the head managers let Joe Ressington go, bypassing Chris (as Joe’s Manager). Seemed things got set in motion to go independent after that.

No time to self host their own social media I guess.
Tbf if you want a big following for ads and such you need to use whatever has the people on it.
Lemmy is great for personal hobbies and enjoyment, but not running/advertising a business (which I assume the podcast is).
And it should probably stay that way? Not sure.
But I’m of the opinion that stuff like Instagram/Fb/X will always be around, but I’ll stick with things like Lemmy for personal stuff.
Nothing will change if no more people starts adopting fediverse, and a podcast about self hosting should at least also post on the fediverse as much as on the main social media apps
But isn’t the intention of the fediverse to keep our people just trying to make money? Even a chill podcast needs to make money.
Although maybe since the fediverse gives users/instances so much control we could keep them in line hahaha
No one is saying they shouldn’t make money, but for their social apps – just like they post on Facebook, Twitter, etc. They could also post on Lemmy, Mastodon, etc. And this gives their users the option to leave the big tech social platforms.

They have several other social medias if you listen to the show. I believe they primarily post on Mastodon or Nostr and they have their own self host matrix server.
They’ve critiqued themselves on this. None of us are completely pure. At least they have an active matrix channel

Probably because Chris is basically a libertarian crypto bro. Doesn’t help that none of the shows he’s on (especially their flagship LUP) ever has any real dissenting opinions to what Chris has decided is acceptable.
What does that even mean?
Their community spaces are largely unmoderated because of the libertarian belief that they’ll just regulate themselves.
Being libertarian is not bad by itself
It means you have no fking clue how any of this works. Libertarians don’t want a society that functions well for everyone.
Did they actually selfhost their podcast? Or did they use some 3rd party distributor?
As someone else noted, they use a platform called Fireside. I wonder how hard it would be to self-distribute a podcast with thousands of listeners.
It shouldn’t be that hard. What you really need is bandwidth.
The podcasting 2.0 spec has tags for alternate means of distribution as well. I’ve been wanting to see torrent magnet links in there, but it hasn’t happened yet as far as I know

Most of their ‘content’ is the hosts reading our donations each episode and playing obnoxious sound effects. It used to be much, much better, but this crypto stuff ruined it all. I really wouldn’t even bother.
If you want a good Linux how, check out the Late Night Linux family of shows. They have programming stuff, Linux stuff, comedy, Linux news, and more. They’re pretty legit and have a strict real content policy.

I’ll admit LUP is worse but self hosted has a lot of the crypto stuff too.
The only crypto self hosted has really relates to their show donations. They really don’t talk much about crypto at all. I think mostly because unlike the other shows, Alex is the dominant personality on self hosted and Chris despite being goofy is relegated more to side kick.
I wouldn’t say most but it is a reality of most podcasts these days that they’ll shout out donors. I kind of like the goofy sound effects personally and the rest of the podcast is chill and perfect for background listening. Of course everyone has their own preferences. I find LUP interesting enough for my level of Linux (enthusiastic amateur).
That show is equal parts content and advertising. That is a bit too much for me…
It used to be good but IMHO nowadays half the show is two people talking about whatever they’ve done last week (fixed the wifi here, new hard drives there, … who cares?) with seemingly zero actual research/preparation for the show, and the other half is paid (in crypto) messages from the audience.
It’s the only Jupiter Broadcasting show I’m still subscribed to, but lately I’ve been either skipping episodes entirely or listening with the chapter list and skipping to whatever I found non boring (like, 3 minutes I would actually listed to per show?). It’s not long until I drop the show entirely.
As most (all?) Jupiter Broadcasting shows, It’s IMHO more entertainment that information. Nothing bad with that if that’s what one likes.
A self hosted podcast sounds like just talking to yourself.
