Kernel upgrade are usualy the most boring stuff when upgrading a linux distro. So, why not both?

neidu3@sh.itjust.works on 01 Mar 01:19 next collapse

When I come home from a humid bar crawl, I always crave greasy food and a messy kernel upgrade

Kirk@startrek.website on 01 Mar 02:02 collapse

I’ve never woken up the next morning regretting greasy food

neidu3@sh.itjust.works on 01 Mar 02:07 collapse

You know what’s never happened? Someone coming home way too late after too much to drink, stumbling into the kitchen going “I could really go for an apple right now!”

Smoking too much weed is stereotyped with eating junk food, but no fruit has ever tasted better to me than when I’m blazed.

SkyeStarfall@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 01 Mar 04:00 next collapse

Weed just makes everything taste better tbh

Edit: but I will say, that does give me a good idea for eating healthier when I’m high

Just finished off a bowl.

I had a bowl for breakfast and it wasn’t cereal

Too old to wake and bake anymore. I’d be absolutely worthless the rest of the day.

Fruit is the ultimate stoned snack. Cures the munchies and cotton mouth at the same time

SkyeStarfall@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 01 Mar 04:01 collapse

It’s something to do with the lack of fats and a lot of sugar in apples, right?

When I’ve consumed alcohol, about the last thing I usually want is something sweet. But I would absolutely love something greasy. I’m sure it’s something with how the alcohol affects the body

Can’t remember the last time I was sober for an OS upgrade

Kernel upgrade WHILE you’re out for beers!

STORY TIME!

Once upon a time, I worked an offshore rotation. So while I was home, I didn’t have much better to do than to hang out with my friend and his coworkers. They all worked for the local branch of a huge international corporation that shall remain anonymous, so I will only refer to the corporation by their initials: IBM.

This local branch dealt with banking systems, handling large clients in Europe, ensuring that their systems ran the way they should. And to make sure said banks could have their stuff sorted when a problem arose, there was always someone on call.

Well, it sucks being the guy on call when the one who’s the perfect guy to fix it is off, and in the spirit of solidarity, they did the only thing reasonable: Went to a local pub, and placed the on-call phone on the table, so if it rang, the expertise to get it sorted quickly was present.

I usually joined them, and more than once did I go for a piss, passing someone with their phone on their shoulder with a laptop in a bathroom sink, trying to sort out banking issues after having had waaay too many drinks.

Haha, I’ve never had to deal with something quite that high pressure but I’ve definitely been a little looser than standard during at least a couple emergencies.

What’s the big deal? For 20 years in the enterprise space it’s been yum upgrade -y && reboot into cron and no issues. At the day job I even had satellite (5 and that shitball 6) cronned up to do my promotion automatically (even when 6 had shit for scheduling and I had to cron-parallel-xargs a better one). All cron.

Hell, I barely pay attention to the email reports now. It’s been that long. Okay, prod updates on Friday night only; but that’s our only nod to risk. Because even after the metastatic fatberg that is Systemd, it’s still barely reliable.

What’s the added risk for Debian packages? Imperfect replacement? No signed manifest to compare against? What?

probable_possum@leminal.space on 01 Mar 09:04 next collapse

Unattended-Upgrades. Most of the time it is better to risk a faulty upgrade instead of an unpatched remote ACE.

Ferawyn@lemmy.world on 01 Mar 11:49 next collapse
