Unfortunate news for those of us who have been following this podcast, its been a very entertaining and educational podcast. Unfortunately it ends in three episodes. Here are the podcast details for those who want to hear about it - its at the beginning of the episode.

Thanks! I wasn’t even aware of them. I’ll check them out. Too bad they are ending though.

tldr:

  • life, work, family reasons for one of the guys. Nothing negative, he just has no time for the podcast anymore but will show up in their linux podcast from time to time in the future.

Life rears it’s ugly head again. It happens tho. I myself, have had to scale things back over to where things are more manageable in my declining years. It wasn’t a podcast that I frequented on the regular, but I did enjoy the material presented.

ikidd@lemmy.world on 18 Apr 12:45 next collapse

Dammit, that’s one of my favorite podcasts.

Support had been dwindling and ad revenue is nearly non-existent for Linux podcasts, so I totally understand why. Still, too bad. I guess I’ll bump my donation to Late Night Linux since I can’t really find another self-hosted podcast that’s worth listening to.

Sunny@slrpnk.net on 18 Apr 12:57 next collapse

They did mention that Alex will join Linux Unplugged podcast occasionally to talk about self-hosted relevant things, plus they tend to all be talked about their experiences around self-hosted - especially in the bootleg edition.

Sproutling@lemmy.ml on 18 Apr 15:54 collapse

That’s good to hear. I think self-hosting is one of the strongest use cases for Linux. I am a big self-hoster myself so I am glad to hear he’ll still pop in every now and then and give us the latest news in the space.

Jakeroxs@sh.itjust.works on 18 Apr 17:13 next collapse

I’m general I heard the podcast ecosystem is in a dire state, post covid numbers dropped a lot seemingly.

It’s funny because I used to listen to podcasts way more frequently before covid, but I’ve sorta transitioned to long form videos instead of straight podcasts.

ikidd@lemmy.world on 18 Apr 17:55 collapse

Commute gone down?

I listen a lot because I’m either working where I need ear defenders and so I listen on BT headphones, or I’m in a combine/tractor. I’d be bored AF without podcasts.

Jakeroxs@sh.itjust.works on 18 Apr 18:37 collapse

That’s a great point, yes, the majority of my podcast listening was on my longer drive before covid then I was wfh for a while but also moved closer to my eventual office.

jarco@lemmings.world on 20 Apr 08:15 collapse

I discovered Linux Prepper a week ago. On most of the previous episodes he talks about tools and self hosting, just not exclusively. The last episode was an interview with a nextcloud employee. You have to find the rss feed, because I can’t find it in my app using search.

walden@sub.wetshaving.social on 18 Apr 12:49 next collapse

One of the few podcasts I listen to sometimes. Wishing them well and thanks for all of the hard work.

Unboxious@ani.social on 18 Apr 14:06 next collapse

Eh. I haven’t listened so much lately anyways since Chris started obsessing over Crypto.

vividspecter@lemm.ee on 18 Apr 22:57 collapse

It’s mainly Linux Unplugged where that stuff leaks into it. I haven’t heard it on “self hosted” very much.

Unboxious@ani.social on 18 Apr 23:09 collapse

Yeah I dropped that one entirely.

eletes@sh.itjust.works on 18 Apr 15:33 next collapse

Ah just another reminder as I get older and that all good things must come to an end.

Some people hate on them but they didn’t have to make this show. It definitely spurred conversations and projects to be better rather than some corporate overlords saying use our ecosystem.

Definitely gonna miss it and guess I’ll check out Linux unplugged every now and then

fluckx@lemmy.world on 18 Apr 15:49 next collapse

Huh. Didn’t even know about this. Maybe I’ll browse their episode list to see if there are some episodes that are interesting.

Sunny@slrpnk.net on 18 Apr 18:47 collapse

You’re in for a treat!

EncryptKeeper@lemmy.world on 18 Apr 18:14 next collapse

That’s a damn shame as it was the only real quality podcast focused on self hosting.

traches@sh.itjust.works on 18 Apr 20:51 next collapse

Aww, man, I’m conflicted here. On one hand, I’ve enjoyed their work for years and they seem like good dudes who deserve to eat. On the other, they’re AI enthusiast crypto-bros and that’s just fucking exhausting. I deal with enough of that bullshit at work

Edit: rephrase for clarity

Railcar8095@lemm.ee on 19 Apr 07:03 next collapse

I use to follow them, until I got bored of long stretches of bitcoin and tailscale promotion.

traches@sh.itjust.works on 19 Apr 09:50 collapse

Tailscale deserves it, bitcoin absolutely does not

Railcar8095@lemm.ee on 19 Apr 10:04 collapse

It does, I use it. But feels disingenuous when an employee spends so much time time talking about it.

nadir@lemmy.world on 20 Apr 00:57 next collapse

Didn’t perceive the AI enthusiasm as too bad. At least they also covered self hosted LLMs and don’t seem like they fell completely for that hype.

The crypto stuff is difficult to stomach though. More of an issue on their other podcasts though.

Auli@lemmy.ca on 20 Apr 14:18 collapse

Selfhosted was their one podcast I still listened to was it wasn’t all crypto and NixOS.

padook@feddit.nl on 20 Apr 02:11 collapse

I’m really going to miss Self-Hosted, it brought a community of us weirdos together. I hope someone fills the vacuum left after ep. 150
