I mean, if you had the plans that would bring down the planet killer, knowing that every hour you delay is another hour where a different planet could be destroyed, would you take a detour to places you don’t actually have confirmation are still secure given how long you’ve been a captive being tortured for Intel, or are you going to go give the plans to someone who can actually destroy it?
Yes, they should have probably chosen a randomized warp vector for awhile, waited at the place they dropped out in and prepped for another jump immediately if/when they get imperial ships following. Then jumped somewhere to change ships and stay ahead of the following fleet.
But then again, you try making rational choices about the biggest WMD that’s been around for thousands of years when it’s been used to destroy your home planet.
You’d think the rebels would have listening posts specifically for receiving information from their many spies and informants that would allow them to leave messages and get in contact with important people in order to keep their base locations hidden.

You can’t really do random jumps in Star Wars. You must stick to existing hyperspace routes and can’t deviate from them. Almost all routes lead to inhabited planets, so stopping anywhere along the way instead of just going directly to Yavin would have risked that planet being blown up by the Death Star. The hyperspace lane system is like a highway network, where everywhere they haven’t built a road is full of landmines and the road only exists because someone very carefully mapped out a path through the mines.

Not random as in “choose any point and hit the gas” but “not pointed at the final destination”
Yes there are hyperspace lanes, but you don’t have to go from point a to point b via a specific route. Much like road highways, there are multiple highway lanes that go to some systems.
If Luke were a little further along in training, he could actually help with blind navigation, like the outbound flight attempted to do. With someone force sensitive and trying to see ahead a bit, you could theoretically just jump, drop out before you hit anything, and keep trying until you have to turn around or you make it to a better hyperspace lane.
Plus mid-jump hyperspace tracking wasn’t a thing until after the Emperor kicked it the first time. You had to wait until they drop put and pick up their signal before you know where they are. So even if they were stuck in a major lane with no additional lanes to choose from, simply go one way, then at some point you drop out and turn around to go back the other way. With luck, the pursuing fleet would be mid-jump themselves and unable to track you since you’ll be going the opposite way and can go unnoticed to Somehere closer to your destination.
Of course if the rebels stashed getaway ships in uninhabited systems, you could jump to one of those, swap vessels, and be gone before the imerials know what happened, and they wouldn’t have to worry so much about giving them the slip in hyperspace.

huh, i always interpreted hyperspace lanes as in a popular route with lots of people, one that’s been cleared out and is safe from space worms and pirates, not like space monorail.

Well, they can always TRY to blind jump, but the lanes had been figured out over 25,000 years and had little to no chance of running into a mass shadow or other things.
Without those lanes, you could get ripped out of hyperspace inside a planet, or be trapped by black holes. Or worse, run into one of the many horrific monsters that lurk in the deep(space)

They arrived at Tattooine because Leia was intentionally going there to find Obi Wan Kenobi. Vader was pursuing her, because he knew they had intercepted the plans.
Originally the Tantive IV had dropped out in a system the empire was keeping heavily patrolled and claimed “engine trouble”, and jumped away.
In the new Disney star wars movies, the Tantive just fled a major space battle and then supposedly tried to claim they were on a diplomatic mission…
But I old and new movies, they were always going to end up over Tattooine

(pronounced tan-tiv-ee according to Lucas and the old radio drama)
Yo, so if they were in a time crunch, couldn’t they have sent it in an email attachment? I mean, those were pretty basic graphics during the briefing.

To be fairrrrr… The plans gave them the weak spot location, they didn’t include the PowerPoint presentation. They had a very short time to throw that briefing together, they were kinda scrambling. The graphics weren’t the plan, they were just a quick bodge job to get the idea across.
Anything they send would have to go through the imperial network, or be delivered via courier.
They chose the courier route and got proverbially shot in the head as a result, but lucky for them they survived. Now all they have to do is get the chip… Wait a minute I know this story!

Unfortunately there aren’t many strictly imperial worlds that would be undefended enough to loiter around, and also uninhabited by people who hate the empire. Any population center is a no-go, but any fortress world would blast you out of the sky before too long. Unless you have a cloaking device, but as we all know, no ship the size of the falcon could have a cloak… coughScimitarcough

I think they met in an episode of The Clone Wars? I know Anakin and Tarkin met, and got along pretty well.

Tarkin was many things, but a dumbass was not one of them. Over-ambitious, definitely. Arrogant, sure.
I guess you could make the argument that he was dumb because he thought the station would force the galaxy to submit instead of fight back harder.
Maybe blinded by his hate for Obi but it really seemed like they were cool with letting the gang get away.
